Learn about fera

fera was founded on a simple belief: Better care for animals and the planet. By repurposing coconut agricultural by-products, we transform natural waste into sustainable solutions for animal husbandry—reducing waste, preventing open-fire burning, and helping lower CO₂ emissions.

The name fera is derived from the Latin nucifera, meaning “nut-bearing,” a term used in the scientific name of the coconut tree, Cocos nucifera. 🌴

 Traceability

fera works closely with Omni Growth Corporation in the Philippines and its local production team to ensure full traceability throughout the supply chain. From the collection of coconut husks to processing and manufacturing, every stage is monitored to maintain consistent quality and responsible sourcing. This direct partnership provides transparency, supports local communities, and ensures that fera’s coconut husk products are produced to the highest environmental and ethical standards.

The Product

1. Superior Absorbency for a Drier, Healthier Habitat

fera bedding and litter is exceptionally absorbent, quickly capturing moisture from urine and other sources. This helps keep small pet enclosures drier, reducing the risk of bacterial growth, mould, and unpleasant odours.

Its high absorbency also means the bedding lasts longer between cleanings, maintaining a fresher habitat while reducing the frequency of full bedding changes.

The science behind the product

This microscopic image reveals the natural architecture of coco fibre. Its hollow, tube-like cells form a lightweight yet highly resilient structure that distributes stress and absorbs impact. The interconnected pores allow the fibre to flex without breaking while maintaining air space and water retention within the substrate. This natural cellular design gives coco fibre exceptional durability and structural stability.

2. Natural Odour Control for a Pleasant Environment

fera bedding and litter naturally absorbs odours, particularly ammonia that can build up from pet urine and cause respiratory irritation.

By trapping odours at the source, it helps keep habitats fresher for longer, creating a more pleasant environment for both pets and owners.

The science behind the product

fera products have a naturally porous structure and negatively charged surfaces that attract and bind ammonium ions. When urine breaks down, it releases ammonia which quickly converts to ammonium (NH₄⁺). These positively charged ions are captured within the fibre structure, helping reduce the release of ammonia gas. This improves air quality and significantly reduces odour in animal environments, supporting better respiratory health for both animals and their handlers.

3. Low Dust for Respiratory Health

Many traditional small animal bedding materials, such as wood shavings, paper and cardboard can produce dust that irritates the respiratory systems of pets and their owners.

fera Pet Bedding is double-sieved to separate fine pith from coir chips, resulting in a low-dust substrate that helps maintain a clean habitat.

Naturally low in dust and silica, coco pith is not associated with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, making it an ideal bedding for sensitive or delicate pets. Learn more:  A clinical and radiographic study of coir workers.

4. Safe, Non-Toxic, and Chemical-Free

fera Products contain no artificial fragrances, chemicals, or toxins that could harm pets if inhaled or ingested.

Small animals often chew and burrow in their bedding, so using a natural, non-toxic material helps create a safer, more pet-friendly environment.

5. Soft and Comfortable for Sensitive Paws

Naturally soft yet resilient, fera creates a comfortable, hypoallergenic bedding that is gentle on small pets’ delicate paws. Its natural thermo-insulating properties help maintain a stable, cosy environment in both warm and cooler conditions. Ideal for burrowing, nesting and resting, it supports natural behaviours while creating a secure and comfortable habitat.

6. Eco-Friendly and Sustainable

fera bedding and litter give new purpose to coconut husk that would otherwise be burned on open fires, a common practice that releases significant CO₂ each year. After use, and when returned to the soil it becomes an positive store carbon.

7. Lightweight and Easy to Clean

fera bedding and litter is lightweight and easy to use, spread, and replace when needed.

Spot-cleaning is simple, as soiled areas tend to clump together, allowing for quick removal without disturbing clean bedding. This reduces waste and keeps enclosures tidy for longer.

8. Natural Insulation for Consistent Temperature

Coconut husk offers natural insulating properties, helping regulate temperatures within the habitat. This creates a more stable and comfortable environment, particularly during cooler weather.

9. Easy Disposal & Garden Reuse

fera bedding and litter is fully biodegradable and can be composted after use. For best results, we recommend removing solid animal waste before composting, as most home compost systems are not designed to safely process pet faeces.

The remaining bedding or litter — naturally soiled with urine and plant-based material—can be added to compost bins, mixed into garden beds, or used as mulch. Coconut husk helps improve soil structure, supporting moisture retention while still allowing excellent drainage.

Composting used bedding reduces landfill waste and gives the material a second life in your garden, supporting a more sustainable pet care routine.

In Summary

fera bedding and litter for small pets offers a balanced combination of comfort, cleanliness, and sustainability. With high absorbency, natural odour control, low dust, and a soft texture, it supports healthier habitats for small animals and a more enjoyable experience for pet owners.

Biodegradable and garden-friendly, it’s an eco-conscious choice that benefits both pets and the planet.
